Matt Smith as Dr Who
The eleventh Dr Who has been revealed to be Matt Smith, a virtual unknown actor compared to others who were in the running to take on the role as the Time Lord in the popular BBC drama.
Matt will replace David Tennant in 2010 to become the new Dr Who and said, "I'm flabbergasted. I haven't slept really! [Doctor Who] is an iconic part of our culture, and now I'm taking that on. It's nerve wracking. Exciting. Exciting."
"It's an iconic part of our culture, my grandad knows about it, my dad knows about it, it's been going since 1963 it has the iconic status of Robin Hood or Sherlock Holmes."
Matt Smith may not be known by the masses but the Dr Who team are confident he will make a good Dr Who. Smith's TV debut was in the 2006 adaptation of Philip Pullman's The Ruby in the Smoke, which starred former Doctor Who companion Billie Piper as Sally Lockhart.
He has also acted opposite Piper in the follow-up, The Shadow in the North, and in ITV2's Secret Diary of a Call Girl.
In 2007, he had a leading role in BBC Two's political drama Party Animals, in which he played a parliamentary researcher.
