The Enemy - The Album Pictures

Here are the EXCLUSIVE album pictures from The Enemy, taken for their debut album released today. This is the moment Tom Clarke, Andy Hopkins and Liam Watts go from being three working class lads from Coventry to rising superstars in the music world. They have worked bloody hard over the past few months getting there and Coventry is proud of The Enemy for what they have done for the city.
The album "We'll Live And Die In These Towns" even features the names of the stations - Tile Hill and Canley as well as Coventry itself on the cover and the album is "dedicate to the fans and the good people of Coventry". A truly historic moment in Coventry's music history, something not seen in such a grand way in 30 years since The Specials burst onto the scene.

Taylor Johns: "F**k Art Let's Dance" - July 6th 2007

Trash Fashion in action @ Taylor John's, Coventry

Trainchaser @ Taylor John's, Coventry

Trash Fashion and local nu-rave band Trainchaser were the stars of this week's "Fuck Art, Let's Dance" at Taylor John's in Coventry. Not quite the venue you'd expect to find nu-rave, especially since the venue has the worst lightening I've seen this year. Coventry's very own Trainchaser got the evening off to a cracking start, helped by a steady mix of DJ tunes beforehand. The crowd were timid and lined the walls like they were going to be shot, but they had no need to fear Dan and the crew as they belted out some great tunes, any Brummies in the room had better watch out, judging by their last song! I don't care if one of them looks like Alan Carr and their MySpace needs more attention - these lads are the dogs bollocks.

The other band!

Second up were a band I neither remember nor care for, while they had the looks that the first band lacked, they just tried too hard. They had their own guy filming it and certainly looked the part as a nu-rave act. They did at least get the crowds to come forward, which was a good thing.

Trash Fashion ARE nu-rave and not only have the clobber and sounds, they can perform like true stars. They are used to better crowds than what had turned up at Taylor John's , but they still gave it their best and proved that they are even better than their official website (check out the live pictures). Right from the first line to the last, Trash Fashion got the crowds going wild. "It's a rave Dave" could be heard coming from one of the girls in the crowd as the band became more naked during the performance. Someone in the crowd at least had a second name as Dave but any attempts to write on Jet Storm were wasted thanks to all that body sweat! The tunes were spot on and anyone who hasn't seen this band in action, needs to be injected with a rustyneedle!

The Enemy: Coventry Telegraph Interview

TOM CLARKE was cramming in his umpteenth interview of the day on the eve of flying out to Ukraine for a video shoot - as you do when you're the vocalist, guitarist and spokesman of one of the hottest young bands in the country.

That status was confirmed last Sunday when Had Enough, The Enemy's second fully-fledged single, entered the charts at No 4. And a similar impact is confidently anticipated next week when they release debut album We'll Live and Die in These Towns.

It's been a runaway success story by any standards but asked if the trio's progress had exceeded his wildest dreams, Clarke is typically non-show-biz.

"It's a nice little cherry on the cake," he says, "and I'm absolutely made up that so many people are into it, that they understand songs that are about quite personal things."

"We owe them a massive thanks because they're the ones who went out and bought it, who made it happen, so they should be as proud as we are."

"But my wildest dreams never included chart positions - I really don't care where it goes into the charts because it's just a number."

Fair enough, but could he, hand on heart, deny that he's just a tad disappointed that the era of Top of the Pops, and that iconic Thursday-night slot for the highest new entry, is a thing of the past?

"That was the one, wasn't it," he admits, "the one when people used to say you'd made it. But perhaps the modern equivalent is that you've made it when you've been on EastEnders and apparently we have - the song's been on there a few times."

These days, of course, bands are always working at least one single ahead, hence the flight to Kiev to film the video for You're Not Alone.

"After the collapse of the Soviet Union there were lots of industrial sites that were just abandoned and left," explains Tom, "and that's reminiscent of the scenes of Peugeot leaving Coventry."

"We couldn't gain access there, but in Ukraine they've got the skeletons, the fossils of forgotten industry that we're going out to try to capture."

"It's not exactly what I expected to be doing this time last year, but it's great."

Some commentators reckon that the album is a fast-fading concept, that a few years from now bands will put out downloadable tracks as and when they become available instead of saving them up for a specially-packaged collection.

"With rubbish music I totally understand what they're saying," says Tom. "For a long time now, most of the music that's been around has been disposable, music that people don't want to keep, that they haven't got any connection with."

"You've got songs about umbrellas, that last about two seconds, which people will download from a website and listen to for five minutes until the next cool thing comes out. What's that about?"

"But real music, music that lasts, is something that makes a statement, that documents a time, and I think it's really important that you hold those sort of albums in your hand."

"When my copy of Northern Soul or Urban Hymns got scratched I went and replaced them with a CD."

"A lot of people will remember Oasis for Morning Glory or, for the hardcore fans, Definitely Maybe. It's the cover, the songs that are on that particular album, that's how they will remember the band."

"We were trying to make a great collection of songs, which work well in that order. It annoys me when you hear an album such as Hard-Fi's Stars of CVTV which just starts from track one to 10 with a token slow track on 11."

"To me that's taking the micky, because that's not an album, that's a means to make money after you've sold your singles."

One of the bands who clearly don't fall into that category are Manic Street Preachers and Tom's admiration grew immeasurably when The Enemy supported the Welsh trio on tour.
"I love 'em ," he says, "and that was one of the easiest tours we've ever done. They're the Manic Street Preachers, they haven't got to prove anything to anybody, but there was no ego there and it was really nice to go out with a band at that level."

"James is a lovely bloke, the most straight-up man I've ever met, and Nicky has got a mouth on him that I love. He doesn't mind slagging people off; he loves to provoke a reaction, not so much to offend as to make people think, to wake them up."

Having established his own credentials as an angry/articulate young man, and enjoyed instant success in the process, Tom is well aware that an Enemy backlash is all-but inevitable in some critical quarters. But he insists that he will take that in his stride.

"The minute you do anything remotely good, people are going to start slagging you off," he says, "because jealousy always leads to resentment."

"But I haven't got any time for those sort of people; I'd rather focus on people who are into the band, who understand us, because they are far more grown up than the idiots who will just sit there bitching."

*Interview from the Coventry Telegraph

The single "Had Enough" is out now and the album "We'll Live And Die In These Towns" is out Monday 9th July 2007.

The Enemy will be at HMV in London on Monday (9th) and Coventry (13th) as well as performing at the free Godiva Festival in Coventry on Saturday 14th July.

The Enemy - NME Pictures and News

The Enemy feature in this weeks NME, with a cracking review of the album "We'll Live And Die In These Towns" on page 32 and a great studio picture of Tom, Liam and Andy. The album gets respectable 8/10, not bad for a debut album.
"........may not be trendy, fashionable or any of the other empty adjectives
that matter so much just an hour and a half down the road in London, but it's
blisteringly frank, frequently inspiring, consistantly brilliant...."
You can listen to the whole album over at www.nme.com and get other exclusive music freebies. You can see Tom Clarke in his NME cover shoot from a few weeks ago, and catch The Enemy in action (like the picture above from the Leadmill, Sheffield).
The lads are also in this months "The Fly" magazine, lots of pictures and an interview to keep fans happy - it's also free from all good music venues which is a bonus!
Talking of free, The Enemy are keeping their feet firmly on the ground as they return to the "city of dreams" (yes, that's Coventry to you!) on Friday 13th July, for an exclusive instore performance and signing for the new album. HMV will be hosting the event and it's a wrist band only entry so get there early. The following night the lads will be playing the Godiva Festival in Coventry, once again it is a free event but get in the tent early as last year it attracted over 75,000 visitors. Even if it rains you'll be undercover, just as long as your inside the Electric Tent. The headline act follows The Enemy and is none other than the Super Furry Animals. Earlier on Saturday (14th) The Ripps will be performing in front of the home crowd, so if you want to find out what Coventry has to offer - get your arse to the FREE event!

Spice Girls: One Week On

It's been a week since the Spice Girls announced to the world their reunion, and the media have been in a frenzy ever since. The Sun newspaper is spearheading the Spice Girls climb to the top, by printing many positive stories. The latest stories include Melanie C's wish to be a better role model this time around after suffering with eating problems 10 years ago and Melanie Brown being a rampant man eating sex maniac. Everyone is still talking about Victoria Beckham's boobs of course!

Each day fresh stories are hitting the headlines as the world falls in love with the Spice Girls all over again. Now in their early 30's, some thought they might be too old for dancing around on stage but as the pictures below show - Ten years on and all five Spice Girls are at their peak.

Remember This?

Remember the sunshine?
Thought I'd just remind you all what we should be doing at this time of year and post a couple of pictures to jog your memory. I'm on holiday and stuck at home with rain, day after day. So I had a little google search to find a bit of sunshine and more suitable summer attire. This time last year I was sunning myself somewhere nice and hot. *Remembers some hot topics from last year on this blog ...........

*OK, I'm not sure this is "entertainment ", but I'm on holiday and can entertain myself with all this free time!

Blah Blah Blah

Over on robmaccaEXTRA this month I'm doing a "31 robmacca pictures" which will be going back through the years looking at the various hairstyles and awful childhood teeth. It's worth a look just to see I get worse or better as the pictures go back in time........

I'm not Patch Ripps personal stalker (honestly, the restraining order still hasn't come through and I don't sniff his underwear!) - here is Patch's mobile phone picture taken on Thursday night as he tried on my glasses. Must admit - they suit him better than they do me! Looking very dappa Mr Lagunas............

Congratulations to Coventry's The Enemy for getting another chart hit this week (#4) with "Had Enough". They worked damn hard last week doing signings up and down the country as seen last week on "robmacca's entertainment news" but I'm rather annoyed and feel ripped off once again. I'd ordered three copies of the signed limited 7" vinyl (only 500 available) - but instead I got just 3 ordinary 7" singles arrive in the post today. I'm sending them back to HMV as i can buy them for 99p from Virgin if i really want them.

At the last single "Away From Here" they said their was 1,000 copies limited edition Stiff Records release - I ordered 10 and it turned out to be not so limited and not numbered so I was annoyed to say the least. OK rant over, well done lads, now stop blagging to us with bogus limited editions cos it p**ses me right off!

Finally, as the Spice Girls reunion became the talk of the world and over 1 million registered for concert tickets on the first day alone, the single "Stop" is available for download. It's all part of a fan campaign called "Stop To The Top". It was the only single not to get to #1 for the Spice Girls and already it has generated a lot of interest with the single entering the Top 100 on iTunes today. Watch this space for more updates............

Patch Ripp "New England" Video

Patch Ripp (The Ripps) was on top form Thursday night at Cox's Yard, Stratford Upon Avon. Sadly Rachel (the drummer!) was ill and so unable to perform, but all was not lost as Patch did an acoustic set off the cuff.

The venue was packed and many younger fans had come to hear The Ripps, Sharks and Men in Caves perform on yet another wet summers evening. It looked like there would be no performance by The Ripps because of the illness, but Patch had made the effort to come over to the venue and see everyone and show his support for the other bands.

Unexpectedly, Patch did an acoustic set on stage, his way of saying "sorry" to anyone who had turned up to see The Ripps. Even after half a bottle of vodka and various other drinks, Patch still managed to perform. Some one rightly gave him credit saying: "It takes balls to get up there and perform on your own". The conversations on stage were quite humourous and flew over the heads of many in the crowd, we wondered if Patch would get around to playing a single song. Vodka is evil but the results are funny, shouting a variety of choice words to the audience was priceless!

I didn't know whether to record the solo performance or not, as it didn't seem fair to film Patch rather drunk on stage. So I recorded just one song - "New England", as I love this Billy Bragg tribute. Sometimes night turn out different from what you expect but it's a bonus when the unexpected turns out to be good.
