Back in late 2001 around 10M viewers tuned into Pop Idol, watching Gareth Gates and Will Young battling it out to see who would ultimately be crowned the winner. Both contestants went on to become household names. Although Gareth was the runner-up, he scored chart success with his solo career - releasing three studio albums between 2002 and 2007.
In 2002 Gareth Gates hit the headlines when Katie Price sold her story to the tabloids about taking his virginity while he was only 17 years old. His image may have been tarnished by the story, but it didn't stop him scoring more hits. Hitting the number one spot four times and earning eight Top 20 hits by the end of 2003.

As the Winter Olympics 2026 drew to a close and the headlines revolving around Penisgate faded and flopped into the background - the memories of French Pole Vaulter Anthony Ammirati knocking the pole off with his penis, may just spring to mind from the French Olympic Games in 2024. The moment was caught on TV and beamed around the world to millions of viewers, as the video below shows. Maybe Anthony will never live that moment down, but at least viewers enjoyed watching him rise to the top!

Memories cast even further back in time may recall a viral picture from London 2012 Olympic Games when US rower Henrik Rummel and his fellow team mates won a bronze medal in the coxless four rowing. It turned out to be anything but coxless as the medal ceremony pictures and footage appeared to show Rummel in a state of happiness, so to speak. Many viewers thought he had an erection in his tight lycra outfit - but Henrik Rummell later said,
"This is me and I swear it's not erect! I don't know why it ended up in that position but there you go."
