Hear'Say: 25 Years Since Popstars

Hear'Say (pic: UK Official Charts)

A quarter of a century ago Hear'Say became the winners of the reality music programme on British TV called Popstars (10M viewers) and were catapulted into the charts with their debut single Pure and Simple. The single sold 550,000 copies during the first week of release and became the 17th best selling UK single of the 2000's decade and was the fastest selling debut single, at that time.

Danny Foster, Myleene Klass, Kym Marsh, Suzanne Shaw, and Noel Sullivan became household names as Hear'Say became the biggest pop sensation of 2001. Fans filled record stores as singles and albums were released in quick succession and the five faces were plastered over magazines and newspapers almost daily. Hear'Say looked like they were here to stay.......

Hear'Say debut album Popstars, March 2001

The debut album Popstars was released on 26th March 2026, which was impressive since the quintet had only won the TV show bearing the same name. The album went straight to number one in the Official UK album charts, selling a whopping 306,631 copies in the first week, also breaking records for fastest selling debut album (at that time).

The Way To Your Love became the second number one single in July 2001 as Hear'Say went on from strength to strength. This was followed by some Summer festival appearances and a nationwide tour in August and September 2001. The record label were determined to milk Hear'Say dry by cramming in another studio album in time for Christmas 2001. Even though reality TV shows we're in their infancy, it became apparent very quickly that the British media would soon turn on the idols they had built up only months before.

Video: Hear'Say - Everybody (2001)

The second album Everybody was released in time for the Christmas charts, yet only managed to peak at number 24. Although the second Hear'Say album managed to go gold, the press had already written them off. The first track to be released was the title song and it managed a respectable chart position of number 4. There were six new entries in the UK Top 10 in the first week of December 2001 - competition was extremely fierce. S Club 7 were enjoying their eighth consecutive single to reach top three. The days for Hear'Say became numbered as Popstars the album and reality show faded into the background.

Hear'Say in 2001 (pic: ITV)

Much has been made about the rifts and splits concerning Hear'Say, but we wanted to celebrate the music, energy and happiness the band brought to thousands of fans around the United Kingdom and beyond. In August 2002, the final single, Lovin' Is Easy would feature a new addition to the band Johnny Shentall (replacing Kym Marsh). The track was another top 10 hit, reaching number 6 in the UK. After 20 months in the spotlight, Hear'Say were no more.

We are left wondering what could have been if the circumstances around Hear'Say had been different and the media had been kinder.

Tales From The Television - Part 18

If you remember TV from the late 70's, early 80's then this 'Tales From The Television' video might bring back memories about one of the TV shows from that era. I loved the theme music and opening titles even more than the actual programme itself.

No cheating on the mini quiz though .........

Tales From The Television - Part 16

Australian soap opera's were the first programme I would watch when I got home from school. Monday to Wednesday it would be 'The Young Doctors' and then 'Sons and Daughters' for the latter part of the week.

I have to admit that I actually liked 'The Young Doctors' and I found myself rushing home from school so I would not miss the episodes. The Aussie soaps were so much better than our own daytime soaps like Emmerdale Farm or Take The High Road. .....

Tales From The Television - Part 15

Afternoon soap operas were all the norm in the late 70's and no-one made them better than Australia. As a kid, I would quickly make my way home from school for the latest episodes of The Young Doctors and Sons and Daughters.

Somehow, Take The High Road and Emmerdale Farm just didn't cut it for me ........

Tales From The Television - Part 14

The battle for breakfast TV viewers began back in 1983 when the BBC launched 'Breakfast Time', quickly followed by TV-AM on ITV. After much hype, it was the BBC which began to win the ratings war as ITV said goodbye to some of the famous five who were originally presenting TV-AM's 'Good Morning Britian'. But all was not over in this telly battle - a rat was about to save the day. Watch this latest tale to find out more......

Tales From The Television - Part 13

A TV channel going off the air because of a strike seems almost impossible to believe these days, but it did happen back in the 1970's when ITV was off the air for what seemed like weeks. This latest Tales From The Television looks back at the advert strike that hampered Channel 4 in it's early days, but the geek in me found great excitement -  find out why in the video below!

Tales From The Television - Part 8

Over the years television has given us numerous catchphrases and many TV personalities are known for their one liners. Back in the day before we had the Internet and satellite or cable TV - as children had few programmes to choose from so we had to make the most of what we had.

Looking back now, it's easy to think the programmes were tacky or 'dated' but hidden inside each show were real gems. From the outrageous Tiswas to the energetic Runaround in the late 70's early 80's  - we grew up loving the fun they bought into our young lives.

Have a cuppa and enjoy this latest tale ........

Tales From The Television - Part 3

Media has changed so much over the past 30 years, but back in the 'old' days we had to rely on television for most of our screen entertainment. ITV was made of many smaller regions, like Thames (and London Weekend Television) and I loved watching the Thames/LWT logo at the start of some programmes.

I also remember going to bed quite scared after watching a certain programme at about 8.30pm on some school nights - this episode of 'Tales From The Television' reveals that TV thriller......

Could Roland Rat Save Daybreak?

As ITV's troubled Daybreak sheds viewers quicker than the Lib Dems shed voters, maybe the only choice would be to bring in 80's legend Roland Rat.

Viewers have been deserting the breakfast programme since it took over from GMTV in September. This week saw Daybreak drop to 545,000 viewers, some 860,000 viewers behind their BBC rivals. It seems that the costly duo, Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley have failed to attract breakfast viewers to ITV.

Back in the early 80's TV-AM was launched to rival BBC Breakfast, yet very early on ITV was being trouted in the rating war. Then bosses brought in Roland Rat (pictured above) with his side-kick Kevin the Gerbil. Within weeks, TV-AM had become the breakfast darling and quickly became the top breakfast programme.

ITV needs to bring in somebody or some animal in order to perk up the viewers, Adrian and Christine have the right chemistry but the programme needs something more. TV-AM is a classic example of how to turn a breakfast programme around - so bring out Roland Rat or Zig and Zag to liven up the show.

Jonathan Ross Confirms Moves To ITV

ITV have confirmed that Jonathan Ross will be joining them to present a new chatshow from 2011, the former BBC frontman will formulate the 18 part programme with ITV. The chatshow is expected to follow the X Factor to capitalise on high viewing figures.

Jonathan Ross released this statement saying, "I am thrilled and excited that after a short break I will be rolling up my sleeves and creating a brand new show for ITV1, I have worked successfully with most of the key figures at the network in the past and cannot wait to get back on screen with a fast, funny and unpredictable new talkshow".

The ITV deal is expected to net Ross a cool £1m, a huge drop from the £6m a year at the BBC but more in line with expectations given the current wage squeeze in the media.
