ALBUM REVIEW: The Ripps - Heartaches + Hangovers

If being in a band is a journey, then The Ripps have travelled around the world several times. The Coventry band first debuted in 2007 with 'Long Live The Ripps' and went on to perform at Glastonbury the same year, storming the indie charts with their 70's punk influenced songs 'Vandals', 'Loco' and 'Holiday'. Brothers Patch and Raul Lagunas experienced the highs of being in a band that was starting to make it big, they were touring the UK and living the dream. But every musician will tell you that the dream can be shattered just as quickly as it was created and The Ripps have endured being capsized a fair few times during their long journey. Thankfully  the brothers never gave up and  their passion for music can be clearly seen in the long awaited follow up album 'Heartaches + Hangovers', released digitally on 21st May and in stores from 4th June 2012.

The Ripps have doubled in band numbers since their debut album, with Alan Ferguson on bass and Phil Cox on drums, Terry Muttitt on keys and Lolly McIntosh completing the line up on vocals. The album title 'Heartaches + Hangovers' might have you thinking it could be a rather somber 45 minutes, but you would be mistaken. This is an uplifting collection of songs that will leave you humming the tunes long before you know all the words!

The album begins with the up tempo 'She's Not All There' - the perfect song to play when you are getting ready for a Friday night out on the town. Lolly McIntosh provides gentle backing vocals with Patch delivering the main lyrics, "She's always in a rush on a Friday night, posing in the mirror she's looking alright, pictures herself in a perfect life with a happy ending." The lyrics continue to grab your attention during 'Anarchy Bridge' a song about heartbreak, with the opening line, "I met you in a crowded room and we danced all night to shitty tunes and you smiled and took me by the hand."  Forget feeling morose in a Morrissey kind of way, the foot tapping beat will leave you feeling happy that you opened your heart up to let love in and experience the pains and pleasures it can bring.



For those who loved 'Long Live The Ripps', the new album has enough for you to join in and sing along, 'Lovesick' is the kind of song you put on repeat and find yourself singing the chorus over and over. Watching The Ripps perform this song live is always a treat and the on stage antics between Patch and Lolly remind me how entertaining the band are. The tempo really reaches fever pitch during 'Lose Yourself', it's the kind of song you can clap along too or have a bit of a wild western jig while on the dancefloor . Once again the lyrics impressed me, "She looks at me with those devil eyes, do you wanna be lonely?, do you wanna get high? I'm asking for trouble and I don't know why...." This is a song about love and how you lose yourself when that love consumes your heart and mind. We've all been there and 'Lose Yourself' relates to each and every one of us.........

Cue the tambourine and maracas for 'Remember Me' as The Ripps get to demonstrate their talents during this musical feast about falling in love and the highs love brings. They follow this up a break up song called 'You and I' , just to keep listeners in the reality loop of the strains and heartaches that relationships can bring upon us. The Ripps then lift us from the doldrums of a broken heart and apply a plaster to our wounds with 'True Colours'  - the sort of song you need to play when you are just getting over a relationship. You know that feeling when you should let someone go, but you really don't want to - even though they've hurt you. This song encapsulates those emotions in just over three minutes and concludes with the lyrics, 'I don't want to let you go.' 


'The Honeymoon Is Over' continues the journey of realisation that a relationship is coming to an end. In typical Ripps fashion - the tune is upbeat and shows how the band have grown up and learnt from the many experiences they have gone through. While the honeymoon may be over, The Ripps prove they have developed and matured their sound with some topical songs about love and life. The album lifts you up with songs like, 'The First Picture Of You' - which starts off quite dark and heavy (a bit like the 'Cov Song' on 'Long Live The Ripps') but bursts into life with the chorus.

The final track on the album 'The Way We Were' is a reflective track that reminds us how people change, just like the four seasons. Even after all the hangovers and heartaches - we still fall in love again. Slowly we open our hearts up and fall in love, removing the plasters from previous relationships by giving someone else a chance to shape our heart.

Previously The Ripps were said to be the new Supergrass, but I would say they are better than Supergrass. The lyrics in 'Young And Lost' say, "we deserve a chance, we deserve it"  This Coventry band truly deserve a chance, they have produced an album to be proud of - all without the funding or backing of a major record company. Their passion and determination not only make them proud of where they come from but also steadfast in the desire to make music. They have journeyed to the heights of Glastonbury and the lows of a 9-5 dead end job yet never given up on their dreams. The Ripps are an inspiration not only for other musicians struggling to make it, but for all lovers of real music. Buy this album and keep that dream alive.......

Coventry's Got Style With Stylusboy's New EP

Having just worked all night, the last thing I thought I would be doing was writing a review about a new EP. Yet my love for all things Cov means I'll give a shout out if something good comes along.

Coventry born Steve Jones (aka Stylusboy) has just released his third album - Whole Picture, which was the perfect easy listening album to play while unwinding after a hard nights labour. I had just been expecting guitar and solo vocals but this EP also features the backing vocals of Rachel Grisedale and much more than just a guitar! The two vocals compliment each other and make the album a pleasure to have on while relaxing as the blend of modern day folk music soaks gently into your ears. Beyond The Flags is the outstanding track from the Whole Picture EP. Stylusboy has scored a winner with this tune, and deserves to be up there with such artists like Danny and the Champions of the World. Steve and Rachel should be very proud of their songs and Coventry are fortunate to have such talent. If you get the chance, check out Stylusboy's website and order whatever tacks you like, or see him performing at a local gig (if you ask nicely he might even come around your house and perform for you and your friends!) There is a limited Whole Picture CD available for those who prefer something a little more physical.

Band of the Week: Century Man

Century Man have the potential to hit the big time, with their Oasis/Jam influenced sound. The four lads have been described as 'Rebel Rousing Indie Rock' by Gloucestershire Echo while gaining recognition around the UK with positive reviews.

Hailing from Cheltenham, Century Man write songs about hope, love and fear - as 'Mauauder', 'The Joker' and 'Comedown' clearly show. The band will be performing in Birmingham, London and Manchester as well as Coventry in the coming weeks.

The Rrrs "Look Good, Feel Great" EP Launch

The occasion for getting drunk and having a wild night out at The Colosseum was The Rrrs "Look Good, Feel Great" EP launch and what an entertaining night it was! The music was pumping out as soon as we walked into the venue with Half of Nothing (previous Band of the Week) up on stage. The lads were as friendly as ever with Alex on vocals, Rob and James playing and backing him up and Phil could be spotted playing drums in his frantic energetic way - which is always a pleasure to watch.

The belly dancer was a first for me and gave something different to the night, but quite fitting for larger than life The Rrrs. Another surprise was the following band, who's name I didn't catch but they sounded quite good anyway. Another energetic drummer, with his wet hair showering droplets of sweat into the beams from the spotlights.

Leamington lads The Carter Manoeuvre (current Band of the Week) had a full weekend cramming in 3 different gigs and gave an all out performance with their indie/experimental/rock sound that kept you on your toes. It is one thing to hear a tune on someones MySpace but to hear it live is another matter and James Ellis provided us with a vocal menu worthy of seconds. James Turrell kept the energy up with his bass playing throughout and still had a smile at the end. It's true that Tom Grundy can indeed play just about everything and he kept himself busy doing just that. Stuart Knight on drums had me quite fixated because he looked like he was sitting an exam paper with his concentrated look while playing.

Finally it was time for The Rrrs to make their Colosseum debut - this is the reason why many were here, for their "Look Good Feel Great" EP launch. I'd got my red t-shirt earlier in the foyer and a badge and now it was time to get to the front and show some support (and also I wanted to party!). The Rrrs took centre stage and soon unleashed their brand of indie/new wave pop tunes. Knickers were being waved in the air during "Is that your underwear on the floor" and the stage now resembled a Tom Jones gig.

Sharliza was on top form, as seen in the picture above and could be seen sticking her foot in Les Woods crotch and having bum on bum nudging with backing vocalist Babs Jorge. The set list was so upbeat and lifting that it could help break any UN deadlock and bring people from opposite sides together. Steve K from Jaffa Rose provided drums again and did an excellent job and Rowan Gifted's lead guitar made the night one worthy of being remembered long into the future.......

Intoduction:

The Carter Manoeuvre are a band of four lads in their early 20’s who are about to celebrate the end of their exams in style, playing live music and getting drunk. Then it is more celebrations as they play their 50th gig at the Coventry Godiva Festival. Even flooding hasn’t stopped them from bringing us experimental rock tunes based on everyday life.

Based at Warwick Uni, The Carter Manoeuvre are made up of James Ellis (Reading/Warwick Uni) who is main vocals, guitar and anything else he can get his hands on, Tom Grundy (Leamington Spa) plays guitar,backing vocals, squeezebox, Hammond Synth with an ability to learn quickly. Stuart Knight (Leamington Spa) bashes his drums passionately while James Turrell plays bass, does a spot of vocals when he’s not hiding inside cupboards!

This Saturday (23rd June) The Carter Manoeuvre will be taking the stage at Coventry’s Colosseum as part of The Rrrs “Look Good, Feel Great! EP launch” (also featuring Half of Nothing).

The BOTW15 Question Interview:

1. When did The Carter Manoeuvre form?

The four of us came together in July 2006, started gigging in August and just kept going.

2. Which artists have influenced your lives?

I suppose the three bands that changed the way we thought about music are Radiohead, Broken Social Scene and The Dismemberment Plan.

3. What’s all this talk about your basement getting flooded?

All as it sounds really, torrential rain hit Leamington while we were out, when we got back we found all our stuff ankle-deep in water! We had an all-night rescue operation, involving one of us throwing out countless buckets of rainwater into the street wearing nothing but pants. We've lost quite a lot of our gear...

4. Name your favourite albums of all time?

Well anything by the three bands we mentioned earlier ranks highest, but aside from that some other favourites include Biffy Clyro's "The Vertigo of Bliss", Bloc Party's "Silent Alarm" and Death Cab For Cutie's "Transatlanticism".

5. What do you think about the Coventry/Leamington music scene at the moment?

Leamington has promise for the future with The Assembly being built, there's talk of an incredibly big name band to christen it but we'll keep schtum about that. If that supports local acts then suddenly bands in the area will have a platform to get some experience alongside touring bands, which is pretty valuable. Some of us are also involved with Superconnected, a monthly showcase night in Leamington, which we dare say is the best night of live music around at the moment..! We actually avoided Coventry for over a year because every time we'd played there or gone to watch a band the venues were empty, there seemed to be virtually no interest in live music from anyone who wasn't in a band. Fortunately things seem to be healthier now, perhaps because of a couple of bands have received national press, or maybe because it's the summer and everyone's feeling optimistic. Music scenes tend to wax and wane fairly regularly, and Coventry's is moving towards a high point at the moment.

6. What has been your favourite gig venue?

Locally it would be The Colosseum or The Jug and Jester. The best thing about the Colly is that they're not afraid to crank the sound system for local acts, so everyone there ends up sounding gut wrenchingly loud, which of course is better.

7. Did you see Cov's "Kombat Breakers" on TV's "Britain's Got Talent" - if so, have they got talent?

We don't actually have a TV in the house, but we'd guess that the title of the show is meant to be ironic?

8. There has been talk of a Hollywood style "Stars of Coventry" in Priory Place - What one person would you put there first?

Philip Larkin. This guy was a champion cynic: "Man hands on misery to man / It deepens like a coastal shelf / Get out as early as you can". Deep-seated pessimism is what drives us on, or at least what drives us violently into the ground.

9. Who would you duet with, if you had the opportunity?

Leslie Feist, no question. She's got the most powerful and expressive voice we've ever heard, she could elevate anything she sang on.

10. What’s the craziest thing that has happened in the band?

In our history we've had monitors fall on drummers and cymbals severing guitar cables all in one night. However our favourite experience so far was a great gig we played in Oxford, where we ended up at a house party. One of us got kissed by a slightly crazy girl who'd just drank vinegar and eventually we had to make our escape headfirst through a window because they'd barricaded the door and wouldn't let us go. I think someone ended up getting thrown out of our car that night too. It was vulgar but strangely life-affirming.

11. Who's your favourite superhero?

It'd have to be Burnt Face Man. Google him... (I did and got distracted watching Episode 2! Visit: http://www.burntfaceman.com to see what is so funny!)

12. If you could turn back time, What one thing would you change?

We would go back four days and build a makeshift ark for all our equipment.

13. Where would you like to be in a years time?

A little farther? Over the years we've been in bands where the line up's changed and we've had to start from scratch, which is refreshing but ultimately a frustrating process. This summer will be the first time we've had the same four guys for over a year. Next year it'd be a good start if we can maintain the status quo and see what we can build on it, we'll take any other developments as they come.

14. Give us your ‘Tip of the Year’

There's a band called Godwits from Newbury, they play an energised, urgent breed of folk-tinged bittersweet songs about civil wars, heartbreak and death, wonderfully bleak lyrics too. They're our favourite band around at the moment, we're bringing them to Leamington for Superconnected on the 6th July, it's going to be incredible. 15. What plans lie ahead for the band?

Getting some fresh recordings down and pushing ourselves forward musically. We've written over fifty songs in the past year but finished very few of them as we're always trying to improve the music we've already got! We just invested in some colourful electronics that should form part of a new stage setup we dreamt up a few weeks ago. Every few months we try and change how the band works to keep things fresh; we're dabbling in some electronic beats, guitar loops and vocal layering at the moment. We'll see where that leads us, it's all sounding surprisingly poppy so far.

Kapow@ The Phoenix, Coventry

Thursday night was live music night in the shape of Kapow! @ The Phoenix (formally known as Campbell's) with three bands The Late Starters, "Band of the Week" - Half of Nothing and The Cougars. A night of talent, making Kapow! well worth a visit in Coventry. Sadly, it was rather like a school disco that finished just as you were getting into it. The bands performance was faultless and by the end you were raring to let it all out, yet sadly The Phoenix closed at midnight..........

First up were new band "The Late Starters", featuring amongst other wonderful and talented people members of The Sequins in their first public performance as The Late Starters. The lead singer being more used to playing bass guitar previously was now lead on vocals and guitar and slotted into the role very nicely.

Second up were our 'Band of the Week' - "Half of Nothing", a great bunch of lads who proved to be friendly before and after the performance. From the dedicated beats of drummer Alex to the rather addictive moves of band member Rob as he moshed away on stage, they brought us a set worthy of praise. Looking forward to seeing them again at the Colly on the 23rd June.

Last but by no means least , "The Cougars" were the stars of the night, having travelled all the way across from Cambridge on the recommendation of The Ripps. This band,with Ashley Read on lead vocals had a stage presence like no other. The stage was awash with beer and water by the time Ashley had finished knocking over his drinks, but well worth it for the entertainment value. Punk music has never sounded so good, with an inspired SexPistols set fitting for 2007. Along side this, The Cougars played a song inspired from their previous visit to Coventry entitled "You Having A Good Time", a fast and furious song about a night out at The Colosseum. If there is one band that deserve a record deal then my award would go to The Cougars!

Band of the Week: Half of Nothing

Half of Nothing:

Introduction:

Half of Nothing have already had a busy start to the year, launching their new MySpace and official website as well as gaining a new bassist, James Abley and management team.

It’s like a fairy tale as Alex Lee (vocals and guitar) and James Abley (bass) were school friends who began the song writing process whilst they were at secondary school but became separated when Alex went on to study music composition at Coventry Uni. James went on to study music technology at Staffordshire Uni and it seemed the dream could be over. But Alex met Rob Colcombe (guitar), Phil Cox (drums) while at Cov Uni and the sound began to be formulated.

Three years later, Half of Nothing made it past the lectures and alcohol fuelled nights, and committed full time to performing. It was at this point James was able to come back into the fold as bassist and complete the fairy tale.

Time in the studio paid off as they revealed their new tunes last month, along with a host of live dates in Coventry and right across the region. They play aggressive pop, with lyrics that speak the universal subjects of life and love. “The music is played with the raw emotion that has been missing from pop music for the last twenty years.”, according to their website and band member James.

The 15 Question Interview:

1. When did Half of Nothing form?

James: The band became a proper band at the beginning of the year when the 'classic' line up was completed.

2. Which artists have influenced your lives?

Phil: Dali, Monet, Van Gough, Bowie.

3. What’s the best thing about COV?

Alex: The randomness. If you leave the house for ten minutes you can come back with a story. Maybe not a good story but a story nonetheless.

Phil: The ice gem statue outside The Varsity.

Rob: Coventry Building Society.

4. Name your favourite albums of all time?

Phil: The Holy Bible - Manic Street Preachers, Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake - Small Faces, Up The Bracket - The Libertines and Friendly Fire - Sean Lennon.

5. What do you think about the COV music scene at the moment?

Alex: So many good bands not enough venues for them all.

Rob: Best in the Midlands, better than Leicester ;-)

6. What has been your favourite gig venue?

James: The Colly.(The Colosseum)

Phil: The Cross, you’ve got to support the local scene, and The Chestnut Tree in Sheldon.

7. Which is better - Costa Del Sol or Costa Del COV?

Phil: Isn’t Sol a larger?

Alex: Let’s not be stupid, it’s all about the Costa Del Sol as much as I love COV.

Rob: Nothing beats the Coventry sea side!

8. There has been talk of a Hollywood style “stars of Coventry” in Priory Place - What one person would you put there first?

Phil: Annie (Golden Cross)

9. Who would you duet with, if you had the opportunity?

Alex: Meat Loaf.

10: What’s the craziest thing that has happened in the band?

Phil: It’s just one long crazy ride.

James: It’s just one long headache. But getting paid a hundred pounds for an encore was good.

11. Who’s your favourite superhero?

James: Bat think.

Phil: Catmandoo.

Rob: Alex.

Alex: Ninja Bee.

12: If you had unlimited power, what would be the first thing you would do?

Phil: Put the kettle on.

James: Canada.

Alex: Anywhere away from Phil.

Phil: With the rest of the band in one place.

Phil: The 3:30 at Ascot.

Rob: Don’t let Phil take you to a gay club.

James: Stay clear of Phil or wear protection.

Phil: Sex, drugs and sausage rolls.

Rob: A record deal, s’il vous plait.

Band of the Week: The Rrrs

Introduction:

The Rrrs (pronounced with a tongue roll, 'rrrrrrrrrrs') were formed in November 2004 and are made up of a Singaporean sex-pot singer Sharliza R aka Maxima Moog (vocals, rhythm guitar) and her three male bitches. They are Les Woods on bass, Rowan Gifted on lead guitar and the third, Felix Faltin (drums) has just escaped to Austria. The band can be found usually at Warwick Uni or at a pub.

Their music can be described as "madcap guitar pop" with "orgasmic scream-a-longs". Sharliza says they play "fun and happy music". To celebrate this the Rrrs will be launching their new EP "Look Good, Feel Great" at Coventry's Colosseum Nightclub on Saturday June 23rd, 2007.

Sharliza: Though Workhouse Festival in Wales is blinking great too.

All: Nah, we all live together on Costa del Rrrrrs - all are welcome to bask on its shores!

8. There has been talk of a Hollywood style "Stars of Coventry" in Priory Place - What one person would you put there first??

All: Patch Ripps, we think.

9. Who would you duet with, if you had the opportunity?

Les: Peter Hook, to absorb his genius.

Rowan: Koji Kondo, made the music to Super Mario. The man's a genius.

Sharliza: Thom Yorke, so I can also get away with wearing a swan dress. Maybe a tiger catsuit, hmm? He's also a genius.

10. What's the craziest thing that has happened in the band?

All: It's ongoing....the fact that we always lose our drummers - we've gone through seven so far! No gardening incidents needed. We've got 3 lined up at the mo but looking for more!!! Please get in touch, we'll treat you very well.

Les: Super Ted!

Les: Go to Japan, resurrect Sega and force everyone to play Dreamcast.

Sharliza: Bring my parents back to life.

Rowan: Sleep in.

13. Where would you like to be in a years time?

Les: On the cover of something, even if it's Angling Weekly.

Rowan: Editor of Angling Weekly.

Sharliza: On ya telly! Propagating the happy happy sound.

14. Give us your 'Tip of the Year'

Sharliza & Les: Put coriander in every dish you make!

Rowan: Put milk in with coffee before hot (not boiling) water. Tea bags to brew for three minutes, no more, no less.

15. What plans lie ahead for the band?

Sharliza: We're launching our Look Good, Feel Great! EP on Saturday June 23rd at the Colloseum, with some belly dancing involved - and a mission to offend the fringe ma-ssive.
